Mystique Fusion Bellydance is a dark Tribal Fusion dance troupe in the San Antonio, Texas area. Anaid with the help of Freya, shaped a troupe that uses American Tribal Style as its core foundation, but incorporates elements of other forms of ethnic dance and theatrics into their stylization of dance. Although both ladies have studied various forms of Western dance, they found their true passion in bellydance. With a common love of all things dark and eclectic and bellydance without boundaries, it did not take them long to find themselves amongst a developing genre of dance known to some as Raqs Gothique or Gothic Bellydance. With the desire to enhance their dance vocabulary and to keep their choreographies fresh and innovative, they continuously take classes and workshops around the U.S.
Together, these ladies are interested in dancing for not just the self, but for the love of dance. They are proud to be part of a non-competitive dance community, and enjoy sharing their performances with new audiences.
Anaid is the founder of Mystique Fusion. She has been a student of various dance forms since the age of 4, yet her bellydance journey began in 2003. She briefly studied with Little Egypt of San Antonio, then found herself studying with Asheba of the Bedouin bellydance company, and soon after discovered Tribal Bellydance. Anaid pursued American Tribal Style bellydance with the Gypsy Rogues of Austin, and became a member of the performance troupe. Although people thought she was crazy for driving to another city for Tribal Bellydance, Anaid was taking 2-3 trips weekly to learn as much as she could, and was offered a teaching assistant position. In early 2007, Anaid created her vision of dark Tribal Fusion, and named it Mystique Fusion Bellydance. She decided in 2008 to pursue this project full time, and actively teaches, performs, and choreographs American Tribal Style, Tribal Fusion, and her interpretation of Gothic Bellydance. Anaid believes continuous study is important to her dance form. She has attended workshops with master artists such as members of the Indigo, Sharon Kihara, Ariellah, Tempest, Sashi, UNMATA, Lorelei (Houston), Rose Harden, Jillee of the Fire Lillys, Shakra, Asharah, Stacey Lizette, and Karim Nagi. Along the way, she has made friends with talented dancers and mentors, finds inspiration where most may not see it, and always enjoys watching and performing all styles of bellydance.
Cristal is a Los Angeles native who first began belly dance in California with DVD’s and soon joined a dance class at a nearby fitness center. It was not long until she was hooked on dancing and then discovered Rachel Brice. From this moment, she decided that Tribal Fusion Bellydance would be her next endeavor. After landing in San Antonio for work, Cristal soon located Mystique Fusion Bellydance and began instruction under Anaid. She enjoys experimenting with new dance choreographies. Cristal’s main influences include Zoe, Ariellah, Kami Liddle and she is grateful for the constant positive support of her mother in helping her achieve her dance goals.
Giomara has been a dancer since the age of 14. She started in Ballet Foklorico de Navarro in 1993 under the
instruction of Tiffany Morey. When her mentor Tiffany left dance to pursue her hair stylist career
(tiffanymorey.com), Giomara became a part of the Guadalupe Dance Company.
Under the direction of Belinda Menchaca, Gio was a part of the original cast of the Balet Foklorico poduction "Rio Bravo"
in 1995. She has danced with the San Antonio Symphony in "Marimba Quest." She studied dance along side of Jesse Borrego,
and was directed by popular dance choreographer Rafael Zamarripa of the Bellas Artes in Colima, Mexico. She was also
exposed to Samba and Capoeira among other forms of dance through the GDC. Gio also has received instruction in Jazz,
Ballet, Modern and Tap dance throughout her college years.
In 1998, she was forced to quit dance, due to a horrible break in her ankle, which developed into Ostechondritis.
In 2006, local bellydancer Natalie Kite invited her to a belly dance class with the Bedouin Dance Troupe. Since belly
dance is hip based and easy on the ankles, Gio thought it would be a great idea for a hobby. As anyone who dances
knows, as soon as she left her first class it went from hobby to obsession. She has studied Egyptian for 2 years and
is continuing her dancing under the training of Asheba. Her love of belly dance has her eager to study other styles
like American Tribal Style, Tribal Fusion, and Gothic Fusion. She has recently started to learn American Tribal Style
and Tribal Fusion with Mystique Fusion, under the instruction of Anaid, and is happy to be part of the performance troupe.
Freya began dancing in 2005 after her bestfriend suggested they get a hobby together. Although her friend soon found other interests, Freya found herself engulfed with DVDs and music of bellydance. She later met Anaid while attending her American Tribal Style class and soon found their passion for dance meshed well with improvisational choreographies. Freya soon became one of the only members accepted into the Gypsy Rogues of Austin performance troupe in just under a year. Having a natural talent for absorbing choreography, she offered her creativity to Mystique Fusion and is one of the co-founders. She has studied with Zira and Michelle of Austin. Freya has also intensively studied for the last year from artists such as Tempest, N.O.Madic Tribal, and HypGothika. Freya believes that dance helps to purify the soul, and finds herself inspired by Tempest, Zoe Jakes, and the Legend of Zelda. She currently resides in San Antonio and is expecting her first child late Summer 2008 and plans on dancing until the due date :)
